WRITERSDOCK POETRY COMPETITION 2008 - Winning Entries!

1ST PLACE: "More Gardened Against Than Gardening" by Sabita Banerji
You were so straight-laced when I first saw you,

Stapled with steel washing-line poles,

Concrete runway rammed up your middle,

Yellow flower, blue flower,

Yellow flower, blue flower,

All the way up the edges.

He�d made your beds with set square and rulers

And finally blotted you from sight

With a shed.
Once you were mine,

I extracted the steel poles from your frozen gums

Healed the crusty cold-frame on your lip.

Had the shed removed.

Let your lean lines grow loose and lazy,

Let daisies blossom on your cheeks,

Saw things peering from your fringes

And lured them in, let them rip �

And now they lean along my window ledge

And lick the panes.

They rest their elbows on your chest,

Brush your sides with their fingertips

And wink pink eyes from your shadows.
And when you wept,

Fat golden pears rained down,

Splatting on the concrete place where the shed had been.

Wasps gorged themselves on your sweet sorrow

(or was it joy?)

And died in bloated bliss.

The sound of the ocean

waltzed in my blissful mind;

the sea soft and warm

rolled and glittered, golden-hued.

Far on the horizon

bending rays fell into night

as I fell in love with you.

you were my lover, delicious red rose.

I reach for your mind and find it has died.
We rode on life's paths with courage and pride,

never expecting such rude, cruel blows.

The signs could be read when your poor heart cried;

opening windows were starting to close.

I reach for your mind and find it has died.
'Hold on - it will pass,' I whispered and sighed,

trying to sound like a doctor who knows.

Each night I sigh as you lie at my side.
My heart bucked and pulled as I saw you slide

down into damp traps of worries and woes.

I reach for your mind and find it has died.
There is nowhere now to cower and hide,

only in hell as our shared torment grows.

Each night I sigh as you lie at my side.

I reach for your mind and find it has died.
